Some of our members have been with the group for seven or more years, coming from diverse backgrounds and holding a wide range of views which all lead to lively discussions. Normally we meet in each others’ houses (suitable for accommodating a maximum of ten people), although in practice it is rarely more than seven people.
There are numerous branches of Philosophy under which there are many sub-headings so there is plenty of material to draw from. Ethics in particular is a popular branch for discussion as it can so often be related to current affairs.
We discuss a different topic at each session, previously chosen by one of our members. They will have researched the topic and provided links to YouTube, BBC Sounds, articles etc for the other group members to study so that everyone can join in a lively discussion. It has to be said that we seldom reach a definitive conclusion, if at all, but that’s part of the fun of Philosophy.
No previous experience of Philosophy is required but it would be useful to look at some of Michael Sandel’s ‘Justice’ series on YouTube. These are entertaining and provide an excellent example of applied philosophy. YouTube provides many clips on various philosophers, and Wikipedia has a very good overview, ‘Outline of Philosophy’, which you may find useful as an introduction to the subject.
If you are interested, we would suggest a trial run of 1 or 2 sessions before joining on a permanent basis.
